LAKELAND (FOX 13) -

Two people were killed Monday night in Polk County when they drove into the path of an oncoming train.

The crash happened near State Road 37 and Ewell Road, between Lakeland and Mulberry.

According to Polk County Fire Rescue, lighted crossing gates were blocking the tracks, and the train sounded its horn.

The CSX train, which was 75 cars long, hit the left side of the car, and knocked it off the tracks. It then hit a railroad control box and caught fire.

The two people were trapped in the car and died at the scene.

Authorities are working to identity the two people inside the car. Any witnesses to the crash are asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 863-413-3510.
