Trayvon Martin family in NYC on anniversary

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Trayvon Martin's family is marking the 1-year anniversary of his shooting death with a candlelight vigil in New York City.

Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, are scheduled to take part in an event Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in Union Square Park, along with their attorneys and others. A moment of silence is scheduled for 7:17 p.m.

The 17-year-old unarmed black teenager was killed Feb. 26, 2012, in Sanford, Fla., by neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman after the two got into a confrontation. It took weeks before Zimmerman was arrested, and he has claimed he was acting in self-defense.

The shooting set off a national outcry over issues of race as well as stand-your-ground laws.
