1 Dead, 2 Hurt In Southwest Philly Rooming House Fire

PHILADELPHIA -

A fire overnight at a rooming house in Southwest Philadelphia has claimed the life of one man.

The deadly fire also sent a couple of other people to the hospital.

Those two survivors are at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. One is in critical conditions, and one in stable condition.

Investigators have started investigating what started the fire, but they tell FOX 29 that there were dangerous conditions inside before that fire started, including no smoke detectors.

Firefighters got the call to the 200 block of South 46th Street around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday and, when they arrived, the first and second floors were engulfed in flames.

Two men inside jumped for their lives – one from a roof, another jumped to a neighbor's deck, saving themselves.

But a third man did not survive. His body was found in the bedroom of the second floor.

After the fire was put out, investigators said they'd found deplorable and dangerous conditions.

"The electrical panel was awful. The utilities in this place is unserviceable. We see no smoke alarms, but we see oil heaters, electric heaters, things like that," Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said.

Firefighters say the electrical panel inside was so shoddy that PECO could never even service it. They wouldn't have done that knowing it would be a fire waiting to happen.

The official cause of the fire remains under investigation, FOX 29's Stacy Stauffer reported from the scene.

Thursday weather looks damp and stormy.  It will be mild and muggy to start with spotty showers early followed by afternoon and evening storms.  Highs in the upper 70s with winds out of the SW 5-10 mph. Some of the storms will produce locally heavy rain and gusty winds.

This system is from the same cold front that caused the midwest tornadoes. It will also usher in cooler air for the holiday weekend.
