
The occupants of this vehicle were transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where they are listed in serious condition.One person was killed and two others seriously injured early Sunday in a two-vehicle crash on Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa.
Michael Gregory Backus, a 20-year-old Odessa resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Edward F. Scanlon of Tampa and Michael Patrick Scanlon, 43, of Indian Trail, North Carolina were transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where they are listed in serious condition.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report Edward F. Scanlon, 49, was traveling south on Dale Mabry in his 2003 Ford Expedition at approximately 5:30 a.m. when the incident occurred.
Scanlon attempted to turn left onto Bearss Ave. when Backus, 20, drove through a red light directly into the path of the Expedition. His 1998 Ford Explorer struck the front passenger side of Scanlon's vehicle.
Backus' Explorer rotated clockwise and overturned before striking a pedestrian crosswalk sign. The vehicle then burst into flames.
The Expedition rotated counter-clockwise after the collision and came to a final rest in the center lane of Dale Mabry. It is not yet known if alcohol played a factor in this incident pending toxicology results.
The official cause of the crash is not yet known and no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
