Clearwater fire and recuse officials say a small airplane plunged into the water near the Bayside Bridge Friday morning.
It happened sometime around 2 a.m. Officials tell us the plane is no longer visible from the bridge because it has sunk below water, but the view from SkyFOX showed the plane submerged just beneath the surface of the water.
An airport fire unit pulled the pilot – who is a 47-year-old man – from the water. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Christopher Wheeler said he was nearby and heard a big splash.
"It had to be something big -- like a plane or something big falling out of the sky," he said. "It wasn't a rock. The only thing I thought it could be was a plane."
It appears he was the only person on board. Crews will attempt to get the plane out of the water and then bring it to a location to conduct an investigation into what led to the crash.
The FAA will be investigating why it never made its final destination in Clearwater.
