Tampa Bay Rays slugger Evan Longoria left spring training this morning to attend the birth of his baby.
The team confirmed that Jaime Edmondson's labor was being induced Wednesday. On Monday, Edmondson tweeted that she was 34 weeks pregnant, and she tweeted Tuesday a picture of the ultrasound.
"Doctors have decided it's best for both mommy & baby to move forward w/ labor today, unexpected but we appreciate all the well wishes," Edmondson tweeted today.
At this time, Longoria is asking for privacy.
Rays manager Joe Maddon said the team is just in a wait-and-see mode.
"Babies have no particular timetable," he mused. "So you just listen to what the doctor says, whatever the baby says, and just roll with it. I don't really get worked up about that except to make sure everyone is healthy, everyone is well and we support from our side. That's all that matters.
"There are certain things that superceed or are much more important than what we do on a baseball field, and this is one of them."
