New Port Richey Police Chief James Steffens submitted his letter of resignation to the mayor Tuesday, saying he is accepting a position as chief forensic investigator with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.
"I sincerely thank you and the City Council for your trust and acceptance of me to lead this agency," Steffens said in a letter to Mayor Bob Consalvo. "I truly appreciate the unique opportunity I have had to work alongside my fellow Department Heads - especially as we tackled the pressing issues of this past year."
In his resignation letter, Steffens says he will help pick the city's next police chief. Steffens has served as the NPR police chief for just over a year.
His resignation date is planned for March 16.
