Tampa radio host remembers 'fiery, feisty' McCready

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A popular voice of country music is now silent, but her music will play on. Singer Mindy McCready was found dead on Sunday in an apparent suicide.

Her booming voice and sassy spirit made Mindy McCready a country music star overnight. Ballads like "Ten Thousand Angels" and "Guys Do It All the Time" topped the charts in the mid-90s, but Mindy's personal problems soon overshadowed her success.

McCready was arrested time and time again on drug and alcohol charges, and in 2011 was center stage in a very public custody battle with her eldest son's father.

On Sunday, McCready was found dead on the front porch of her Arkansas home of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. She was just 37 years old.

WQYK Country radio host Dave McKay first met McCready when she was 19. She was a karaoke queen from Fort Myers who was rising in the ranks of country music.

"She got more and more feisty and more confident every time we interviewed her. She made for a great interview because she was fiery," McKay said Monday.

McKay says that fiery spirit likely lead to her quick downward spiral out of the music industry and into rehab.

McCready was released from a court-ordered substance abuse program just days before her death, after she lost custody of both of her sons.

"The statistics are clear. People who complete treatment have a better chance of moving into recovery. That said, I can't speculate on Mindy, how long she was there, if she complied with their recommendations. What we do know is people who are in treatment longer have a better chance of continuing on in sobriety," addiction counselor Brenda Iliff said Monday.

It's a day many say they saw coming, a terrible ending to so much talent.

"It frustrated me and I think it frustrated a lot of people because I say everyone deserves a pay day. And she had it. She got a pay day. And she ruined it. It's just a tragic ending," McKay said.

Mindy McCready's boyfriend, David Wilson, was found dead on the exact same porch about a month ago. His death is also being investigated as a suicide.
