In the midst of their own cruise passengers aboard the Carnival Legend, found themselves playing the role of first-responders to those stuck on Carnival Triumph.

One week ago a fire in the engine disabled the cruise ship leaving its 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members stranded at sea.

"We ended up coming close to them one time and we were shouting back and forth," explained Legend passenger Warren Boyer. "They seemed to be good spirits."

Becky Thome was also vacationing on the Legend and was glad to help.

"It was great being next to them," she said. "We felt like we could at least give them moral support."

Thome, Boyer and several other passengers said the Legend strayed off course to assist the Triumph after hearing about the crippling fire. The delivered what food and other supplies they could spare.

Once the blaze was extinguished conditions on the Triumph went from bad to worse. The ship was floating approximately 150 miles from the Yucatan Peninsula. Passengers had to endure rotting food, no air-conditioning and backed-up toilets.

"Everybody went to that side of the ship just to watch because it was so odd to see smoke coming out of the top plumb," said Karla Hill. "It was scary."

One of the passengers on the Triumph had to be transported over to the deck of the Legend due to a medical condition.

Now that she's back on dry land, Hill says she and her other fellow passengers were more than happy to help those on the ailing ship.

"I think it just felt better [for them] knowing there was another ship there," Hill added. "It felt great to help; I wish we would've done more."

She says the Triumph disaster will make her think hard about taking a cruise in the future.

Hill: "It makes me nervous when you get on balcony at night and think what if I didn't have any power? It scares you a little it just does."
