Decades ago, a TV series called Knight Rider featured a car that did amazing things with electronics, but it never found anyone a good deal on dinner, or spa treatments or dental services.
Now, new Fords, and soon other cars, have something called Roximity. It finds discounts wherever you drive.
"It constantly refreshes by the GPS system and gives you constant new deals," says Marsha Strickhouser, of Valpak, the company known for sending packets of coupons in the mail.
THE NEW GENERATION
Valpak has been known for more than 40 years for its print coupons.
"We mail those coupons to nearly 40 million homes every month," says Strickhouser.
But, when the developers of the Roximity mobile app came calling, Valpak made a major move into a new way to deliver their discounts. If you don't have one of the new cars with Roximity, you can download it from the App Store.
"When they're driving by our restaurant, not everybody's head is going to turn and see our sign," says Keith Macatee, manager of Bascom's Chop House on Ulmerton Road in Clearwater, "So it's nice for them to get an app right on their phone."
When we tried Roximity a couple of weeks ago, we found deals on everything from day spas to dentistry. It may be the best thing since Knight Rider.
