Publix is rolling out a new way to save money on your grocery bill. They're introducing a digital platform to clip coupons. The new system allows you to pick and choose coupons for your favorite items on your computer or your smart phone.
Kimberly Guzzi knows a thing or two about clipping her way to extra cash. She saves her household an average of $200 a month through couponing.
"All day, every day, seven days a week actually," she laughed.
But even the savvy shopper is welcoming a new way to battle a high grocery bill. Publix is launching a digital platform for clipping coupons.
"More and more of our customers are digital savvy, so we want to make sure that we remain in pace with that trend. We want to make sure we maintain the best service possible for our customers at all times," said Publix Community Relations manager Dwaine Stevens.
Customers simply create a username and password, linked to their cell phone number. They then can browse through dozens of deals and click on the coupons they like. The savings are automatically stored to the account, and redeemed by punching in the phone number on a keypad at checkout.
"It's a very easy process. You can print the list of coupons you want and you go in there and you save money very easily," Guzzi said Tuesday.
Experts say Publix will save cash on virtual coupons, too.
"This is the wave of the future, for sure. Right now, digital coupons only represent about 4.6 percent of the coupons that are redeemed, but this is the way companies want it to go. There's less fraud with digital coupons and there's less work, too," said FOX 13 consumer reporter Chris Chmura.
But don't say goodbye to your weeklies just yet. Publix insists print ads aren't going anywhere. The digital option is just that, an added amenity, available in all stores by mid-March.
