In the already pressure-packed lives of USF students, now there's another thing to worry about: an alleged case of rape inside the Holly G dorm this week.
"I feel like it is kind terrifying just because I do live on campus, and so I'm already like extremely paranoid," said Dechelle Dubose, a junior.
Campus police say it happened early Sunday morning but wasn't reported until Monday evening. A female students says she was attacked in the apartment-style dorm by someone she knew, and that's about all we've been told.
We do know it's the second case of rape reported this year at the school.
"I want to say it's a safe campus, but I feel like with the stuff that's been happening around campus it's not as safe as it should be," said Dubose.
In mid-January, a male said he was raped in a student center bathroom. Like the other case, he said he knew his attacker. Both are still being investigated.
"The fact that we've had two people come forward shows that we've done a lot of work at the university to create an environment where people feel safe coming forward," said Lt. Charlotte Domingo, spokeswoman for university police.
On such a large campus, it's not a huge surprise things are going to happen
Last year, there were four reported cases of rape, including a freshman who was battered inside Kappa Hall by a stranger. In 2011, only one rape was reported, but in 2010 there were seven.
Officials say the first line of defense is remaining aware.
"That's the most important thing be is to be aware of surroundings, what's going on around you," Lt. Domingo said
Some students say they plan to take it a step further.
"I do plan on getting pepper spray and Taser," said Cindy Chery.
"People just have to be more careful who they let in their personal space," she added.
So far, no arrests have been made.
