Governor Jan Brewer is back in Arizona after attending the Super Bowl. She flew on a private jet with an Arizona Cardinal and an actor who has been an outspoken critic of SB 1070.
We've learned the man who funded that flight may have some questionable business practices.
Larry Fitzgerald tweeted a photo of all of them, and that's how we found out about this trip.
Governor Brewer says she paid for her own Super Bowl ticket, but her flight on a private jet was a gift. A gift from valley businessman, Jason Hope.
Two years ago, Hope was sued by Verizon after he was accused of misleading cell phone customers.
In the photo, you can see Governor Jan Brewer, with actor Edward James Olmos and athlete Larry Fitzgerald to her left. To her right is Scottsdale businessman Jason Hope.
"He is a pretty prominent individual in Republican circles, he's become an acquaintance of the governor and I believe that how they came into contact," says Matt Benson, Governor Brewer's spokesperson.
Hope's business practices have been questioned in recent years. Hope owns a cell phone marketing company which has been accused of a complex business scam. Hope was sued in federal court by Verizon. That suit was settled last year.
"I don't know what level of awareness she has of that," says Benson.
Hope was also sued by the Texas attorney general. He settled that suit for $2 million. A business associate of Hope's told us she's surprised to see Governor Brewer accepting a gift from Hope.
"He is not a lobbyist so there's no problem here, now if the expense is in excess of $500, she does need to report it," says Benson.
Actor Edward James Olmos was also invited on the jet. A few years ago, he was critical of the state and spoke out against SB 1070.
"They had a great time. I know the governor told me she enjoyed spending that time with him I don't believe that they had met previously. You know, this trip was more about football than politics."
Hope has never faced any criminal charges. He calls himself a philanthropist and has donated to various charities around the country. We're told that Hope invited Olmos because they've done some charity work together.
A private jet to New Orleans costs at least $10,000 each way. She's required by law to disclose the jet ride.
