MINNEAPOLIS, MN -

President Obama took to the road Monday to visit Minneapolis as he works to push proposals for gun control at the federal levels.

The Monday trip marks the first time the President headed outside the Beltway to promote the proposals to curb gun violence. The proposals were introduced in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting.

Minneapolis is a city that's long been focused on fighting bun violence.

The White House released a photo over the weekend of the President skeet shooting at Camp David back in August.

Obama's supporters say though they value the 2nd Amendment, they believe it's time to protect Americans by reinstating the assault weapons ban, limiting high capacity magazines and instituting universal background checks.

Those against the proposals, including the head of the National Rifle Association Wayne LaPierre, argues they will only hurt law abiding gun owners.

Last week, Vice President Biden traveled to Virginia to discuss gun control measures. The White House says more trips are planned for both.
