An eight-year old girl is in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital, after she was hit by a car on Busch Boulevard Sunday morning.

Jayla Shubber underwent surgery after suffering from internal and head injuries. She's a third grader at Sulphur Springs Elementary School.

Tampa Police say the little girl was hit in the innermost lane of eastbound traffic, as she tried to dart across the six-lane roadway.

Jayla was with her 12-year old sister at the time of the accident. They were returning home after stopping by a nearby gas station for a snack.

"I think it's definitely heartbreaking. It's sad, even that the parents would let a little girl go out on her own on a very, very busy road," said Leslie Arroyo, who lives close to the girl's family.

The girls were attempting to cross the road near the intersection of Busch Boulevard and 14th Street. There is no crosswalk in that area and the speed limit is 45 miles per hour.

Tampa Police say the driver of the car that hit the child will not face charges.
