Have you ever wanted to drive a Lamborghini? Aston Martin? High-end Ferrari? The Richard Petty Stock Car Driving Experience launched the 'Exotic Driving Experience' just last year.
The Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando is headquarters for a fleet of exotic cars worth millions of dollars. These cars ship out to other tracks across the country, taking the Exotic Driving Experience on the road.
Organizers knew this second business would take off faster than the Ferrari 458 Italia, 0 to 60 in just over three seconds.
Professional driver Dustin Carter explains these models are like magnets for car enthusiasts. Ferraris usually sell out and new featured cars usually sell out too. "The first day, we pretty much knew this was gonna be it. It went over very well."
Dustin drives me through the street course in the Audi R8, explaining, "Now that track is not a racing track, it's just a technical course. It highlights all the characteristics that these cars actually have -- the speed, the handling, the braking power. These cars can go up to 135 mph and you have to slam on the brakes to stop. You have 600 feet to get down to 10 mph, and they will stop."
My turn to drive the course: Around the bend, down the straightaway, paddle shifting all the way. Paddle shifting's an adjustment. I miss the flipper and flash my brights, then turn on the windshield wipers.
This does not interfere with speed. I accelerate to well over 100 mph.
Once I see the number signs counting down "6-5-4-3-2-1" on the right side of the track, I slam on the brakes, down shift three times. Then I zig and zag, making left and right turns, maneuvering through the street course.
I guess I've always liked taking corners at higher than factory recommended speeds. Only here, the driving professionals encourage me to push this car to see what it can do.
This is exhilarating!
