Outcry over warming center in Mount Vernon

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Some residents of Mount Vernon, N.Y., are upset they were never told about plans to have the warming center in their neighborhood.

Friendship Worship Center Church has a 12-bed warming center, or as many call it, a homeless shelter.

At a community meeting Thursday night, residents spoke out against it because it is just steps from a school and several neighborhoods. The message was clear: not in our neighborhood.

Bishop C. Nathan Edwers, who runs the church, said that only a few people have used the warming facility so far.

A major sticking point has to do with money the church is getting: Westchester County paid the church $120,000 to run the shelter. That is taxpayer money.

The bishop said the money is used for staff.

Westchester County legislator Lyndon Williams said the church was not the proper location for the shelter.

The warming center opened in January and will remain open until April 15.
