Get rid of unwanted guns, get cash

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

There's a way to get $75 in cash and a sports package that will keep you busy at the Trop and the Forum without spending a dime.

"Operation Gun Shop" offers sports tickets and cash -- no questions asked -- in exchange for your firearm.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office does not to want de-arm you, but instead to unburden people who don't know what to do with their old weapon lying in the closet.

"We're not talking about collector's items or firearms that people want so they keep them safe and secure. We're talking about the firearms that people want because they forgot they had," said Lt. Chad Chronister with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

All the guns taken in will be destroyed. A recent call for arms brought in 40 weapons from one person alone.

"It's completely anonymous. Amnesty for the day when you turn it in. If we run the firearm later on and find the rightful owner -- but we're not going back to find out who turned it in," Chronister said.

It's no coincidence this buy back comes after weeks of gun control news in the headlines.

"With the travesty in Newtown we've been getting inundated with phone calls and emails requesting a deputy respond," Chronister said.

Each call to turn in a gun can take a deputy off the streets for two to three hours to retrieve and file away the firearm.

Operation Gun Shop keeps deputies on the street by setting up several locations county-wide where citizens bring guns to law enforcement.

Donations, not tax dollars, help cover the cash payment and tickets to see the Rays and the Lightning.

"You're going to get all of the above, and for us that's important because that keeps a deputy on the street for us," Chronister said.

There are five different locations across Hillsborough County buying back guns on Saturday from 9 until 2:
