St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster is making a final attempt to keep the Sweetbay grocery story in midtown St. Petersburg from closing.
He left the Pinellas County Commission meeting Tuesday to head to Gainesville, where he is scheduled to talk with Sweetbay executives about keeping the store open.
Foster said he is meeting with the manager of the real estate department and a vice president of government affairs.
"We've got a lot of questions and hopefully we'll get some answers," Foster said.
Sweetbay recently announced it was closing 33 of its lower performing stores in the state. The store in St. Petersburg has been a big part of the city's attempts to revitalize the area, with taxpayers investing millions to open the store.
City officials say they are doing what they can to either keep the Sweetbay open, or find another retailer to replace it.
