Capitalize now: Gas war rages in Clearwater

Posted: Updated:

How low will gas prices go in Clearwater?  That's where you can find some of the cheapest gas in the state, thanks to a gas war between several different stations along Gulf-To-Bay Boulevard.

Gas is $3.15 a gallon for regular there, the lowest price in the state.

Some folks said it's worth the drive across the bridge to fill up, when you're saving nearly 30 cents a gallon.

New kids on the block, Thornton's, at the corner of Duncan and Gulf-To-Bay fired the first shots in this gas war.

"That kind of competition is terrific for consumers," said Gregg Laskoski with

The family-owned, Louisville-based company opened their first Florida store in Clearwater Dec. 5 with the promise of the, "lowest gas prices in town."

Several stations like the Shell right across the street soon followed.

"I think it's that competition that's driving the price as low as it is at $3.15 a gallon," said Laskoskim, who added, big box retailers like Sam's Club and Costco are known for their competitive gas prices designed more to drive you into their stores.

"The volume that they do is so incredible," said Laskoski. "That it usually gives them access to discounts that many other retailers can't touch."

The national average is $3.32, which is up 5 cents over where it was a month ago. Across the state of Florida, it's $3.41, and across Tampa Bay the price is $3.34, which is only up about a penny this past week.

"When you see $3.15, it's going to make you stop?," we asked Pavlina Dimovski.

"Yes, it'll make you fill up your tank also!"  she said.

"I come all the way from Union Street to come here from Dunedin, to get this gas," said Dimovski.

"45 minutes," said Oscar Martinez, who drives to Clearwater from Port Richey to fill up.

"Oh man, I'm telling you man, gas has really been high and on my truck, it kills me, going to work it just kills me," said Martinez.

Shane Downs was smiling as he filled-up his Mustang because he's paying less than where he lives in Palm Harbor.

"I know it ain't $3.15, I know that," he laughed.

So, does the travel time warrant the savings?

"Oh yeah, this is the cheapest in this area," said Mary Williams. "Everywhere else is from $3.31 and up!"

"They're crazy," said Doug Money. "You don't save that much to drive across the bridge to get a dollar or two."

He is enjoying paying only $3.15 for gas right now.

"That is a good deal," he said. "A very good deal. I was on my way from Clearwater Mall and I live in Largo, cheapest gas we have over there is $3.29, so I stopped here and filled it up."

So how long can we enjoy this economically-priced gas? As we start the switch to summer blend, the supply tightens up, warned Laskoski. So watch for prices to start climbing by the end of February and continue a slow climb until May.
