Police in St. Pete say they've arrested a driver in connection with a hit-and-run crash that left one person dead and a second injured.
According to police, it was around 6:30 when officers were called to the intersection of Coffee Pot Blvd. NE and Walnut Street. Upon arrival, they found that two pedestrians had been struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
One of the pedestrians, a 70-year-old woman, had been knocked into the bayou water and was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics. The second pedestrian, an elderly man, was found lying on the pavement and taken to Bayfront Medical Center as a trauma alert.
According to witnesses, a black 2006 Ford F-250 pick-up truck was driving southbound on Coffee Pot Blvd NE when it left the roadway, struck a utility box, then ran up on to the sidewalk striking the two pedestrians. The truck then left the scene, but a witness caught the tag number.
Officers say they've located the vehicle and taken a suspect into custody.
No names have been released yet.
