The Clearwater Police Department says two officers who fired at a man during a welfare check back in December were justified in using deadly force.
Officer Kris Wise and Officer Michael Beaver opened fire at 56-year-old Mark Wayne Bill after they said he pointed a rifle at them.
Bill was hit in the forearm and chest. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center where he is still being treated for his injuries, the police department said.
The officers were called to Bill's home on December 23 after family members said he was suicidal. They confronted him in the backyard and ordered him to drop the rifle, but he didn't comply and the officers opened fire, the department said.
They were put on paid administrative leave. They are now cleared to return to normal duties, the department said.
