A 6-year-old boy fell ill at his school today and later died at the hospital, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
The boy was in the lunch room at Cypress Creek Elementary School in Ruskin when he complained of feeling sick.
An employee took him to the nurses office, where investigators say the boy's condition deteriorated, and the staff called 911.
Emergency crews took him to South Bay Hospital in Sun City where he died a short time later, the sheriff's office said.
Authorities identified him as Jose Maria Pinto-Rosa.
Investigators say they are interviewing family members and looking into the boy's medical history.
"Right now we don't have any concerns about foul play. We believe there were medical issues involved," said Larry McKinnon, with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
McKinnon added that they don't believe the boy died of an infectious disease or any other illness that would put other children at risk.
McKinnon said they are investigating the timeline of the school's response to the boy's illness.
The medical examiner will do an autopsy to determine how the boy died.
(A previous version of this story reported the boy's age as 5 years old, based on information from the sheriff's office.)
