Trevor Dooley has been sentenced to eight years of prison and 10 years of probation in the death of his neighbor, David James.
The shooting happened in 2010. Dooley was convicted of manslaughter this year.
An argument between the two broke out on a Valrico playground over a young man skateboarding near the park.
Dooley said he shot James in self-defense. James died at the scene.
James's wife Kanina James let the anger, frustration and sadness pour out as she spoke directly to Dooley.
"I've been told I should forgive you. I want you to know I will never forgive you for what you carelessly took from this world. Your death will not come soon enough," she said.
Dooley was convicted of manslaughter for killing David James at a Hillsborough County Park in 2010. The two argued over a kid who was skateboarding on the basketball court.
James's then 8-year-old daughter Danielle was there when her dad was shot in the chest.
A letter written by her was read aloud in court.
"I never wanted my dad's last words to be ‘call the ambulance, I've been shot,'" she wrote. "Know then I hate your guts, Trevor Dooley,"
Dooley hung his head during much of the hearing and at one point appeared to say a prayer. He didn't speak, but did prepare a statement read by his attorney.
"If I could only express myself better I would tell you ...how sorry I am for the pain and sorrow I've caused Mr. James' family," his attorney read.
He was ultimately sentenced to eight years in prison followed by 10 years of probation.
All of it not nearly long enough for James's family.
"I don't buy any of it," Kanina said.
"He's been afforded every opportunity to clear his name, and he was found guilty. Time to serve his time," said James's mother Antoinette James.
Dooley could have faced up to 30 years in prison.
