Sweetbay Supermarkets are taking a big hit, closing 33 stores by mid-February, including six of them in Hillsborough County.
The closings will have a big impact on our state and area. The company announced it will be closing nearly a third of its stores in Florida, and that means about 2,000 employees will lose their job.
A spokesperson issued a statement saying this was a difficult decision for the company, but it will enhance the overall performance of the stores.
Here's a breakdown of the stores in our area: There are six in Hillsborough, 12 in Pinellas and Pasco, and four across Sarasota and Manatee.
There will also be one closing in Lakeland, Plant City and Spring Hill.
After the closings, Sweetbay will have 72 stores remaining open in Florida. It will also be closing the pharmacies and liquor stores connected to them.
