SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
The attorneys representing George Zimmerman have received a copy of Trayvon Martin's school records.
Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, is accused of shooting and killing the Miami teenager who was visiting family in Sanford on the night of February 26, 2012.
State prosecutors and Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Trayvon's parents, objected to releasing the records; however, Circuit Judge Debra S. Nelson previously granted the order to release the records, saying that Mark O'Mara, Zimmerman's attorney, was entitled to the information.
It is the hope of the defense that the records might shed some light on the character of the 17-year-old Martin.
"Trayvon Martin's school records are protected, and they should not become part of the public record," O'Mara said in a statement sent to FOX 35. "We will not post them on our website. If any detail of the school records should be considered relevant in the course of a Self-Defense Immunity Hearing, only the parts deemed relevant to the case will be entered into evidence."
Crump and prosecutors have said that the records are irrelevant.
