Bubba takes the stand in trial

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

If you missed the circus in town, there's still time to catch a show -- it's going on inside a Tampa courtroom as two of the biggest egos in radio do battle.

Todd "M.J."Schnitt is bringing the lawsuit against Bubba "The Love Sponge" Clem, claiming Bubba defamed M.J. and his wife on his radio show.

After the attorneys' opening statements, Bubba took the stand.

The trial is expected to last as long as three weeks, exposing the "radio wars" that went on between the rival DJs for years.

The question is, what kind of precedent could the trial set? If MJ wins, would it change morning radio? Would it take the shock out the shock jocks?

"I have absolutely no expectation anybody will tone anything back," said Al Tompkins, a faculty member with the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg.

He says both MJ and Bubba will likely benefit from the increased exposure, but the case is little more than a "public curiosity."

"The fact of the matter is there's an audience for it both these guys are pretty popular so there's obviously a public appetite," he said. "It is a public curiosity for sure but legally probably doesn't have that much weight,"

Wild 94.1 morning show host Orlando Davis summed it up like this:

"I call it rich people problems," he said. "It is absolutely is the most egregious waste of time."

If there is a lesson here, Orlando says it may be the need for a little more personal responsibility.

"You give me a mic and a couple 100,000 people listening every 15 minutes, I think should be knowledgeable about what I can say," he said.
