Protecting the most vulnerable children and protecting children in general will be the focus at an important Hillsborough County School Board meeting Tuesday.
Board members are expected to vote on a proposal to put an armed guard in every elementary school.
If the plan is approved, it would add more than 100 security officers to the payroll at a cost of about $2 million a year.
The money would come from the district's emergency fund, which is usually reserved for hurricanes and other disasters.
Also at today's meeting, the board will work on a plan to protect special needs students. Last October, 10-year-old Jenny Cabellero walked away from a gym class and drowned in a nearby pond.
As a result, two aides have been fired and two administrators were demoted.
The board will also talk about new ways to get special needs students the care they need.
