New song extols shopping for used goods

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

At a time when most artists are bragging about the excesses in life, there's a new song taking over the Tampa Bay airways, and it's the exact opposite.

Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" is an ode to second-hand shopping. You won't hear him rap about how pricey his shirt is; rather, he describes how little it cost.

So far, it's a big hit with listeners, becoming one of Hot 101.5's most requested songs.

"People love this song," said Phoebe Kushner, midday host and music director at Hot 101.5. "Because it is different, and when you listen to the lyrics and you realize how different it is, it makes it stand out a lot."

In interviews, Macklemore has said he really does practice what he preaches and often shops at thrift stores. His message of frugality resonates with the folks at Revolve Clothing Exchange in St. Petersburg.

"We take what's old and we bring it into the new, and we're not just in the excess," said Vimala Faith.

The racks at the store are filled with stylish duds, all at a fraction of the retail price. In fact, second hand stores are seeing a large increase in customers, thanks to the tough economic times.

"Lots of people come in everyday and they're so grateful stores like this exist. They can come in and get a jacket that would be $100 brand new and it maybe $20 here," Faith said.

And now a new song is making it even more acceptable and hip to shop cheap, not steep.

"It is really nice to not have to spend the kind of money you would have to at the box store to get it here," said shopper Nicole Brown.
