A Winter Haven mother is facing drug and child neglect charges – thanks in large part to some concerned neighbors.
Police responded to the home of April Jennifer Ray, 31, at 5:15 p.m. Investigators say the door was wide open and two of her three toddlers were out in the yard alone.
Police entered and said they found her sleeping in a bed, with drug paraphernalia and prescription drugs nearby.
There were piles of clothes all over the home, dirty dishes with food piled on the counter and feces on the floor, according to police. Concerend neighbors reported it to police.
"I applaud these observant and concerned neighbors in calling authorities when they did," said Chief Gary Hester in a statement. "Small children left alone is bad enough, but roaming around outside alone can turn tragic in the blink of an eye. These neighbors helped avoid a much worse scenario."
Ray was taken to the Polk County Jail and charged with child neglect, possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.
