Just off east College Road, you'll find the Ruskin Inn. It's a quiet hotel without much going on in the middle of the night, but at 3:30 Monday morning, that changed when the phone rang at the front desk.
"The clerk was sitting in the hotel lobby who said she received a call from a man who said he was a hotel guest, and he was unable to sleep because there was so much noise going on outside of his room," explained Cristal Bermudez-Nunez.
The clerk walked down the hallway of the hotel out the back door to the pool. That's where she saw the armed suspect, and he led her out here to this wooded area, deputies say.
And that's when she heard gunshots. Only later did she realize she had been hit. When she left the scene, she was talking and she was transported by ground to Tampa General Hospital.
A bullet grazed her head. The suspect went back inside while she lay on the ground, and he robbed the hotel. Robbery seems to be the motive, according to the sheriff's office, and the suspect may have been working with an accomplice.
"It seems based on where he was; the fact that he was armed and already covered. He was there to rob them and possibly was working with that person who placed the call. That's something we don't know at this time," said Bermudez-Nunez.
Investigators do know this is what he looks like. Blurry security photos show him inside the hotel.
"We're still looking for a suspect, a white male between 5-foot-10 and 6-feet tall, medium build. He was wearing a black hoodie, and he did have a black mesh cloth covering the bottom half of his face," said Bermudez-Nunez.
