A 40-year-old Port Richey man is behind bars facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of a woman he had been living with.
Steven Robert Clairmont Jr. is being held without bond at the Pasco County Jail.
According to a Pasco County Sheriff's Office report Kelly Bennett was found dead inside her home on Wolcott Lane early Saturday morning. She was discovered by her teenage son.
At an intersection approximately 1 mile away from the residence deputies found the suspect covered in blood walking along the roadway. He was immediately taken into custody and questioned by Detectives with the department's Major Crimes unit.
Investigators believe Bennett, 35, was murdered at approximately midnight.
Clairmont's arrest report states he confessed to killing someone named ‘Kelly' after he was read his Miranda rights. The suspect had been living with the victim for approximately three weeks.
Bennett died as the result of blunt force trauma. When deputies detained the suspect he was found to be in possession of Bennett's cell phone and a prescription bottle of medicine belonging to her son.
Clairmont is no stranger to law enforcement in Pasco County. He's been arrested on five previous occasions on a variety of charges including burglary, assault and driving under the influence.
Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
