Investigators say a tip about squawking roosters led them to a Plant City home, and what they found surprised just about everyone.
"I don't think they had a clue. I mean, they were shocked obviously when the deputies came through the back fence and heard all the commotion going on," said Sgt. Steve Lewis of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies not only broke up an alleged cockfighting ring, they busted in while the roosters were fighting.
"I saw some people running, and I saw the chopper and the sheriff's cars," neighbor Eddie Herrington said. "I thought something violent had happened. I came over to my neighbor's and found out it's another cockfighting ring."
And it's not the first time deputies have been here. Just a few years ago deputies raided this very same home in 2009 for the same thing.
"Had no idea it was going on then, actually, until we saw the police," Herrington said. "And people running and the same thing happened again this year. And today, it happened again. I had no idea. They keep it pretty quiet."
In all, deputies arrested 11 people.
"There's actually one area where there's a pen, where there's a fighting ring," Lewis said. "It's surrounded with wood, and there's a table there. There are scales that weigh-in the chickens. There are spurs that they use in cockfighting that they attach to the roosters when they're fighting."
Neighbors say they're just sick to their stomachs.
"It's a sad thing to see," Herrington said. "Fighting chickens? It's a really cruel thing to do, and we're all just real tired of it around here actually."
