Christmas card thief hits St. Pete post office

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -

Days after thieves snatched hundreds of pieces of mail in Riverview, police say another part of the Bay area has been hit.

Burglars targeted locked mailboxes at the post office in downtown St. Petersburg, prying open several boxes.

Someone called police after seeing a suspicious person. They found mail scattered on the ground, and police think the man was looking for Christmas cards with money or gift cards inside.

"Looks like some of the envelopes that were Christmas cards were ripped open, quickly looking to see if there's something there," said Mike Puetz of St. Petersburg police. "Other envelopes were just discarded. Business envelopes that probably they figured wouldn't contain very much in them were just left unopened."

Earlier this week, thieves snatched hundreds of pieces of mail from people in several Riverview communities.
