A 9-year-old child went to the hospital Thursday after swallowing a piece of crack cocaine on Christmas Day, authorities said.
A woman was arrested, but it was unclear what her relationship to the child is.
Deputies took 45-year-old Kimberly Losurdo into custody and charged her with child abuse.
According to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, rescue crews were called to a home in Spring Hill around 1:30 a.m. Thursday about a child convulsing and losing consciousness. Investigators say blood tests at the hospital showed cocaine in the child's system.
Detectives say the child told them he/she had ingested an irregular, rock-like substance two days ago, and that he/she had seen Losurdo smoking, snorting and ingesting drugs. (It was not clear from the sheriff's office media release if the child was a boy or a girl.)
Two other children, ages 11 and 16, were removed from the home.
Losurdo is being held in the Hernando County Jail on $5,000 bond.
