NJ residents still recovering from Sandy thankful for holiday

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Superstorm Sandy may have forced some New Jersey residents from their homes but on this Christmas they say they have a lot to be thankful for.

It's been nearly two months since people from Little Ferry and Moonachie, New Jersey had to be rescued from flooded homes and streets.

Hurricane Sandy caused a levy to break along the Hackensack River causing all levels of government to respond in rescue efforts.

And on Christmas – the memories are still fresh.

Katie Leo and her family are celebrating Christmas after having their entire basement destroyed in the storm. Katie's dad, Michael hired a contractor to get everything back to normal.

And in Moonachie, the Vaccaro family is getting ready to have a feast with all the fixings. They too dealt with flooding but are grateful they can still celebrate the day with loved ones.

Meantime back at the Leo's household, opening up gifts and spending time with family is just what they needed after such a rough past two months.

The Leo family says they're hoping to get that downstairs basement all finished up by the new year.
