Big boxes draw thieves

Posted: Updated:

Clearwater Police paired up with the city's Solid Waste Department to offer residents a safe option to stashing holiday trash.

Eight temporary dumpsters are now open in locations scattered across Clearwater. Residents are encouraged to break down holiday boxes and dispose of them in the dumpsters, to avoid being targeted by criminals.

Clearwater Solid Waste Department officials say leaving your Christmas boxes curbside is like posting a billboard for burglars.

"They'll label a home because they see what's out at the curb. They know what's out there and they'll target that home," said John Pittman of the Clearwater Solid Waste Department.

The eight dumpster locations are open now until January 2nd.
