Hosea Feed the Hungry Christmas feast

ATLANTA -

Volunteers began preparing a festive feast on Monday for the annual Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless Christmas dinner.  It's a huge undertaking; more than 10,000 are expected at the annual dinner.

Around 200 volunteers began cooking at the DeKalb County Jail on Monday. They'll prepare about 800 turkeys, 500 pounds of rice, 400 trays of stuffing, 300 gallons of gravy and 3,000 cans of veggies.

"There's a lot of homeless people in Atlanta. There's a lot of people who just may not be able to afford to have dinner," said Tara Miller, a volunteer.

Elisabeth Omilami says her father, Hosea Williams, who passed away in 2000, would be proud of all the volunteers.  Omilami said that this year's meal is dedicated to the families affected by the deadly shooting in Newtown, Conn.

"Because we know that under somebody's tree, there is a gift with a name on it that is not going to be there. We need to prove that we are connected and we care and we remember," said Omilami.

Volunteers said there's no other place they'd rather be.

"Well, when you are surrounded by good people, it's a good time so it's a lot of fun," said Donna Gillis.

For the past 31 years, Nick Johnson has been in charge of cooking the meals.

Nick says that he continues to come here year after year in honor of Hosea, who Johnson said that he met 32 years ago.

The feast is scheduled for 10 a.m.  at the Georgia World Congress Center.
