Severe weather threat poses danger for holiday travelers

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

For those traveling west for the holidays, a cold front is bringing a threat of severe weather for portions of the Gulf States, and that threat includes the possibility of tornadoes.

According to FOX 5 Storm Team meteorologist Joanne Feldman, the National Weather Service has upgraded some portions of the Gulf States from a slight risk to a moderate risk of severe weather.

If you're traveling to anywhere in the Deep South, especially Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama or the Florida panhandle, keep up with the weather on Christmas. The severe weather threat includes the possibility of tornadoes in the Deep South.

As for Atlanta and the metro area, the storm front is expected to arrive between midnight and 8 a.m. on Wednesday. There is a slight risk of severe weather in the area, with the primary threats being strong winds and the possibility of an isolated tornado, especially south and west of Atlanta.

In the meantime, a Dense Fog Advisory has been issued for north and central Georgia through 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Visibility will down to a quarter-mile or less in some areas, according to FOX 5 Storm Team meteorologist Joanne Feldman.  (Click here for a list of active Warnings/Watches/Advisories)

To keep up with the weather threat, it may be time to download the FOX 5 Storm Team App if you haven't done so already. It's a free download in the App Store or Android Market; just search for "FOX 5 Storm Team."
