A man armed with an AR-15 assault rifle was shot by two officers with the Clearwater Police Department Sunday night.
Officers Kris Wise and Michael Beaver were not injured during the incident. The suspect was transported to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Authorities identified the man as 56-year-old Mark Wayne Bill.
According to a Clearwater Police Department report officers were dispatched to 2224 Glennmoor Rd. North just after 7 p.m. to conduct a welfare check.
"When the officers arrived they made contact with the person who lives there and he was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle so they backed off," said Elizabeth Daly-Watts, Public Information Officer for the City of Clearwater. "He fired the weapon and our officers returned fire and hit him."
At the time of the shooting the suspect's 15-year-old son was in the home but was not injured. Detectives are talking to the teen in order to learn more about what transpired prior to the incident.
Both officers will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard policy in most officer-involved shootings.
Wise has been with CPD since January, 1998; Beaver was hired in February.
The name of the suspect is being withheld pending proper notification of next of kin.
The investigation continues.
