Price price, baby: Christmas savings could top Black Friday

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Alyssa Malito still has some shopping to do.

"I definitely feel it's paying to do it last-minute this year," she said.

She's hard at work against the Christmas crunch, and so far it's paid off at the register.

"A lot of buy-one, get-one free," she said. "A lot of half off, the mall especially, we just came from International Mall and we saw a lot of great deals there right now."

Some people say they're finding better deals now than on Black Friday.  That's not normal, according to FOX 13 consumer reporter Chris Chmura.

"Traditionally, you don't find deals at the last second because national retail chains are so large they plan everything out months in advance, and they just don't turn on a dime," he said.

This year the number of people walking into stores has been down.

"When foot traffic goes down, the sales signs generally go up," Chmura said.

Way up.

"We've' just gotten a lot of great clothing that's been on sale. Some electronics we've gotten that have been on sale," said John Coup.

Almost everything he and his wife bought has been on sale.

"Sometimes when you wait until the last minute you get more for your money," Lauren Coup said.

You'll even see sales popping up on your cell phone, but realize this strategy doesn't end online. It's a long way to the finish line for retailers.

"If we think about this like a row of dominos we have to wait for the shipping window online to close before it's too late, and then they'll really start ramping up the sales at the old brick and mortar stores," Chmura said.

Which means the closer we get to the Christmas count down, the better the deals may be.

"It's a great way for people to get out and spend money – is by having great deals.  If there weren't great deals, you'd have a lot less money being spent," Coup said.

This all seems to be retailers reacting to the current market, not a long-planned strategy.

So how low will prices go?  On Friday, we should start to have a sense for what weekend prices will be through Christmas.

And then it's off for another round of post-Christmas sales.
