The holidays are a time for giving and sharing, but right now, Metropolitan Ministries is struggling and unable to give to those in need.
Donations are drastically low, organizers say. The organization provides turkey dinners and toys to thousands of families each Christmas, and this year, the need is up by about 10 percent.
Right now, they really need toys – in particular toys for infants and teens, which would include things like makeup, lotion, jewelry, DVDs and sporting equipment. Donations are coming in, just not fast enough.
"We're less than a week from Christmas, and as you can see behind me there are bare shelves," said David Bledsoe of Metro Ministries. "We are serving thousands of children a day, and we desperately need donations to come in and serve those kids."
A lot of the food shelves are bare as well. The organization needs turkeys, stuffing, yams, cereal and mixed fruit. They also say cash donations or gift cars would be greatly appreciated.
Metropolitan Ministries says there's always a last-minute push for donations each year, and they're hoping for the same this year.
Now, organizers say, is the time to donate.
