HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (AP) -- A former manager for a Long Island agency that cares for people with head injuries has pleaded guilty to stealing the identities of patients in order to collect tax refunds.

Newsday reports that Benjamin Achampong pleaded guilty Tuesday to multiple counts of identity theft, offering a false instrument for filing and other charges.

The 30-year-old Achampong worked for the Long Island Head Injury Association in 2007. The Hauppauge agency cares for people who have had strokes or severe brain injuries.

Achampong admitted taking patients' names and Social Security numbers. He then filed state tax returns in their names and deposited the refunds.

Suffolk County Court Judge James Hudson said he would sentence Achampong to 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison.

Ahampong will also pay $20,000 in restitution.
