ATLANTA -
The Georgia State University marching band has been selected to be part of President Barack Obama's inauguration next month.
Members will march in the 57th Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C.
They were chosen from more than 2,800 applicants.
The GSU band was just formed three years ago when the college got a football team.
In addition to football games, the band has performed at community and university events.
Director of Athletic Bands Chester Phillips thinks they were selected because the group stayed true to its roots
"We actually designed our show this fall to be very oriented around the state of Georgia. The theme of our show this fall was called ‘A Georgia State of Mind,'" said Phillips.
Included in their application package was a letter of recommendation from Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal.
During performances this year, the band has played renditions of such classics as "Georgia on my Mind" by Ray Charles and "Devil Went Down to Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels Band.
