An elderly woman died Tuesday afternoon after falling overboard from a boat in Clearwater.
It was just after 12:30 when Clearwater Fire and Rescue received a 911 call for help from a boater who needed help. Using GPS to track the phone, rescuers eventually found a man and woman in a small john boat on the very north end of Clearwater Beach in the mangroves.
According to CFR, the 81-year-old man told them that his wife, also 81, fell into the water from the boat. He pulled her from the water and started CPR, but she was in cardiac arrest when rescuers arrived.
The woman, later identified as Beverly Barnes, was taken to Morton Plant Hospital but did not survive, Clearwater officials said.
Her husband Norman was also hospitalized after swallowing a lot of water.
A Florida Wildlife and Conservation Commission spokesman said he believed the couple was visiting from out of state.
Investigators say there's nothing to indicate foul play was involved.
