The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says a Clearwater teen was sexually assaulted on the way to her school bus stop Tuesday morning.
It happened near the intersection of Whitney Road and Whitney Drive, close to U.S. 19. The 17-year old victim told detectives she was walking to her bus stop between 6 and 7 a.m. when a stranger approached her from behind, pulled her away from the main road, and then sexually assaulted her.
Deputies say the victim was able to give only a vague description of the suspect: A black male between the age of 25 and 30, with a medium build and wearing a black sweatshirt.
Late Tuesday night, deputies had not located a suspect. PCSO will be heightening patrols around the neighborhood on Wednesday morning as students head to school.
"We are going to be increasing our patrol in that area tomorrow morning in light of what has occurred. At least to lend a little more safety and security to that area," said Cecilia Barreda of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Meanwhile, parents in the quiet community say their sense of safety is shattered.
"It's really a shock. I'm extremely shocked that this happened in this neighborhood," said Liz Carollo, who lives just a few blocks down from the scene of the attack.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance in locating the suspect. If you have any information, you're asked to contact PCSO or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS.
