The Fulton Science Academy High School may lose its public school charter. The Fulton County school board voted unanimously to revoke the Alpharetta school's charter on Tuesday.
Fulton County Schools Superintendent Robert Avossa was in favor of the decision to pull the charter.
"Since 2007 this district has been bringing issues and concerns to this school and they have not been reserved, and so at some point, we've got to take action and today was the first step," said Avossa.
Fulton County school board members heard arguments from school district officials, as well as from representatives of the academy. The academy's middle school's charter was yanked earlier this year, and officials say they have found similar problems at the high school that they say warrant the high school's charter being revoked. Those problems include governing issues, finances, student enrollment and operations issues.
Representatives with the academy say an independent audit supports their assertions that the school is financially sound, has strong leadership and is not in violation of the charter.
Governing board chair Randall Morgan joined representatives of the high school who challenged the district's findings during the four hour hearing. His two sons attend the school.
"We have students who come from all extremes of north Fulton….from south Fulton, taking over an hour to get there because they choose to go this school because it offers them things their home school cannot offer," said Morgan.
Morgan and other parents said they remain hopeful about the school's future despite Tuesday's ruling.
"This does not end today. The state is the one that makes the decision so now we will walk out of here and we will start working toward the conversation with the state," Morgan said.
The Fulton school board wants the state to terminate the academy's charter on June 30.
The state school board will make the final decision.
