Tampa police say a taxi driver was shot early Tuesday morning in an attempted robbery.
It happened near Chestnut and Willow when the driver was dropping off a passenger around 3 a.m.
The driver, identified as 42-year-old Annuel Delitieux, told police a black man in dark clothing walked up to the car and pulled a shotgun, pointing it at him and demanding money.
Delitieux was shot in the chest after tossing money out the window, police said. As he sped away, police say he crashed into a police car 100 yards away, with the passenger still inside.
"The driver did flee the scene," said officer Mercedes Machado, "and the passenger stayed in the vehicle until approached by officers."
The officer called an ambulance. Delitieux is in stable condition now at St. Joseph's hospital.
The suspect is described as being 5-foot-7 or 5-foot-8. Police are looking for more information on him.
