A naked man armed with a shotgun was shot dead by Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies Sunday at a residence in Clearwater.
Danny M. Meredith, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene just before 4 p.m.
According to a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office report deputies received a call from Donna Meredith, the deceased man's wife, at approximately 3:15 p.m.
She told them that she and her husband had gotten into a verbal argument earlier in the day and that she decided to leave to allow things to cool off.
When she returned at 3 p.m. there was a note on the door saying that there were guns in the house and anyone that entered would be killed.
Mrs. Meredith, 56, backed away and called 9-1-1. She met responding units down the street from their home at 1856 Bugle Lane.
Two deputies went up to the home and knocked on the door but nobody answered for approximately four minutes. One of the deputies went around to the side of the house to see if he could get Mr. Meredith to respond.
"When he door opened he was completely naked – he had no clothes on and he was armed with a shotgun," said Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. "He pointed the weapon at the deputies and made some remarks in a threatening manner."
The deputies, fearing for the lives, fired several rounds at Meredith.
Investigators say Meredith worked for the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority. He had no prior brushes with law enforcement and Gualtieri said deputies had not been dispatched to that resident previously.
Both deputies involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave. The investigation continues.
