A 38-year-old Lakeland man is facing improper exhibition of a firearm charges following a road rage incident Friday evening.
Terry Lee Hayes was booked into the Polk County Jail and released Saturday after posting a bond of $500.
According to a Polk County Sheriff's Office report an off-duty deputy witnessed the suspect waving a gun at an elderly woman driver on South Florida Ave.
The incident occurred just before 6 p.m.
The deputy was with his family when he heard the driver of a 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe blowing his horn. When he turned to see what was going on he saw a man – later identified as Hayes – shaking his gun out of the driver's side window of his vehicle.
The off-duty deputy believes Hayes was doing so in an effort to intimidate the woman. He wrote down the suspect vehicle's tag number and observed Hayes pulling into a residence on Ivanhoe St.
"The men and women of the Polk County Sheriff's Office are always working to keep the community safe," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "Even while trying to enjoy time off with their families, our deputies find themselves fighting crime."
The deputy contacted dispatch and reported what he saw. Responding deputies questioned Hayes who was uncooperative and denied the allegations.
A search of his Tahoe turned up the gun the off-duty deputy saw the suspect waving in traffic.
The identity of the elderly woman driver is not known. Authorities are hoping to speak with her to see if additional charges against the suspect are warranted.
"We will not tolerate anyone pointing a gun at an innocent person especially a senior citizen," Sheriff Judd explained. "If we can locate her we may be able to bring more charges against this road rage suspect."
If you have any information about the victim or this incident please contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office at 863-298-6200.
